If you have habit of brushing teeth immediately after eating, you should not do it anymore. Why? Dental health experts said, brushing teeth within the period of half an hour after eating or drinking a cup of coffee can seriously impact on tooth decay. The researcher explained, after someone drank soft drinks or acidic drinks, the acid will erode the tooth enamel and the layer below the enamel, called dentin.
Brushing your teeth at wrong time, especially in a time span of 20 minutes after a meal can push acid to be absorbed by teeth much faster, so it will trigger corrosion of tooth decay naturally.
"By brushing your teeth, you actually have pushed acidic deeper into enamel and dentin," said Dr. Howard R. Gamble, president of the Academy of General Dentistry in an interview.
Studies have shown that the corrosion process will be faster if occurs the teeth was brushed within half an hour after consuming soft drink. This habit will make the layer of enamel is damaged.
In this study, researchers asked the volunteers to wore dentin samples in their mouths, and test a different regiment of brushing time. The test results show, brushing teeth within 20 minutes after drinking soft drink turned out that the teeth will be more easily damaged. The study also revealed, for those who just eat spicy food, wait until one hour after the meal seems to be enough to avoid negative effects.
"After a period of intra-oral between 30 and 60 minutes, the damage appears significantly less severe compared to control group who did not brush their teeth. It is concluded that in order to protect the dentin surface, at least you have to wait through 30 minutes before brushing the teeth." he explained.
