What Cause Gallstone Disease?

Why people can have gallstone disease? Who are the vulnerable people affected by gallstones? Gallstones are hardened sediment from digestive fluids which form in gallbladder. Gallbladder is a small gland in the right side of the abdomen just below the liver, which secretes fluid to digest the food in the small intestine.


There are many things can trigger gallstones disease. Gallstones can be caused by various reason. Too much cholestrol in the bile, too extreme diet is two of a lot of reason why gallstones diseases can occurs.


The cause of gallstones deposits are as follows, as quoted from MayoClinic, Thursday (15/03/2012).
  1. Too much cholesterol in the bile
    Normally, in the bile there are cholesterol-breaking compounds in sufficient quantities. But if the production of cholesterol in the liver more than the capacity of bile to break it down, then  excess cholesterol will crystallize and eventually fossilized.
  2. Too much bilirubin in the bile
    Bilirubin is a compound that is produced when the body break down red blood cells. Several conditions led to excessive production of bilirubin by the liver, such as cirrhosis or hardening of the liver, biliary tract infections and some types of blood disorders. Excessive bilirubin also trigger gallstones disease.
  3. The gall bladder is infrequently emptied
    If the gall bladder is infrequently emptied, then it will full. Bile can become highly concentrated and accelerated the formation of gallstones. 
 While the quoted Medicalnewstoday, people prone to gallstones is as follows : 
  1. People who are obese or overweight, especially women.
  2. People who recently lost weight in large quantities
  3. The people, especially men who intentionally lose weight, then increase again.
  4. Women who were using oral contraceptives (birth control pills).
  5. Women who are undergoing high-dose estrogen therapy.
  6. People who have a history of gallstones in their close relatives
  7. People who are high-fat intake from food
  8. Women's 2 times more vulnerable gallstones than men
  9. People over the age of 60 years
  10. People who are taking anti-cholesterol drugs statins
  11. People with diabetes
  12. Women undergoing hormone replacement therapy at menopause.
