Sleeping position that cause Body Pain

Sometimes you feel your body hurt when you wake up. This is most likely because of wrong sleeping position. What are the cause of this body pain? The wrong sleeping position can affect the entire body, causing pain and damage in the long run. Besides poor sleeping position can also aggravate existing conditions such as shoulder injuries and osteoarthritis. This is because the wrong alignment of the spine that affect muscles, joints, organs and nerves, so it can cause back pain and pain in the neck and other body parts.
The Cleveland Clinic and National Sleep Foundation give the reason why the body feel hurt when wake up :

  1. Neck or back pain is caused by the possibility of having too little space on the bed, curled up too tight, so it didn't give comfort to internal organs, or it could be improper body alignment.
  2. Sleep on stomach only for short of time can cause back and neck pain due to the position of the curve of the spine and chest overload. Although it is comfortable position, it will cause lower back arches too much, and often cause neck pain.
    But if you used to sleeping in a supine position, you should put another pillow under your knees to relieve pressure on the neck and chest area to prevent pain.
  3. The soft level of the bedding also can influences, sometimes a soft bed is not providing enough support for us. Similarly, the pillow, if it is too soft may not provide good support for neck and shoulder.
    American Chiropractic Association recommends using a small pillow and put it on the hard shoulder so that it can avoid the pain in the neck. Meanwhile, to relieve back pain when sleeping you can put a small pillow between your knees on the other side.
  4. If you suddenly feel pain, tingling or numbness while sleeping, it showed the possibility of sudden compression or fracture or affected nerve (impact). If it continue, just go to your doctor to check the condition of the spine.
  5. If you often feel hurt after waking up, you should begin to evaluate the bed and pillows you used. If you have any arch on your bed, you should avoid that area to sleep. And you can consult to chiropractor or physician for your problems.
