Smoking less as dangerous as smoking a lot

Some people are smoking, but not become addicted. These people smoke only when they want it or simply just to socialize. Be social smoker still have the same risk as active smoker. The study found that social smokers brain ability has decreased as many as heavy smokers.

According to a study in Northumbria University in Newcastle, England, social smoker is defined as a person who smokes about 20 cigarettes in a week or three sticks a day. This behavior can cause memory impairment and lower mental health as those who smoked 15 cigarettes per day.

In a study published in the Addiction Open journal, psychologist from Collaboration for Drug and Alcohol Research Group at Northumbria's School of Life Sciences provides a series of memory tests to 28 social smokers, 28 daily smokers and 28 non-smoker. The participants were asked to recall a series of actions that have been determined at some point in a video.

Groups of smokers have poorer test results than non-smokers, as well as social smokers. These findings reinforce the theory of researchers that there is no safe way to smoke.

"This new research shows that health risks of smoking less is no different than smoking every day. Smoking is clearly damaging memory," said the researcher, Tom Heffernan, PhD, as reported by everydayhealth.com, Thursday (03/08/2012).

And side effects of smoking not just that. Research shows that occasional smoking can also increase the risk of heart disease, cancer, coronary heart disease and other diseases. According to a study from the American Journal of Public Health, social smokers do not regard himself as true smoker, so tend to think that they don't have health problems so they will less motivated to stop smoking.
